Call for Proposals: 8th Annual Hippocrates Poetry and Medicine Symposium at Harvard Medical School on 6th May 2017

Proposals for abstracts and oral presentation are now being accepted for 8th Annual Hippocrates Poetry and Medicine Symposium, to be convened at Harvard Medical School in Boston, MA on 6th May 2017.

Held in conjunction with the international Hippocrates Prize for Poetry and Medicine, one of the highest value prizes for a single poem in the world, the symposium has attracted scholars from across the globe with broad interests in the health humanities and in particular, the intersection between poetry and medicine, and in narrative medicine.  Confirmed distinguished faculty include Dr. Neal Baer, writer and producer of the Emmy award winning TV show ER; Dr. Rafael Campo, Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and award winning poet; Jorie Graham, Pulitzer prize winning poet; Professor Michael Hulse, Professor in the Department of English and Comparative Literary Studies at the University of Warwick, UK;  David Jones, A. Bernard Ackerman Professor of the Culture of Medicine at Harvard Medical School; Elisa New, Powell M. Cabot Professor of American Literature at Harvard University; and Donald Singer, Professor of Clinical Pharmacology and President of the Fellowship of Postgraduate Medicine, UK.

The symposium will also feature an evening workshop on “Poetry and Training the Eye” at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

The 2017 Hippocrates Awards and Symposium are being organised in partnership with the Arts and Humanities Initiative of Harvard Medical School. The Awards will announced by the judges at a ceremony at Harvard Medical School in Boston, USA, on Saturday 6th May 2017. Now in its 8th year, the Hippocrates Prize has attracted over 8000 entries from across the globe, from the Americas to Fiji and Finland to Australasia. All awards are for a single unpublished poem in English of up to 50 lines of verse on a medical theme.
