This painting was inspired by the meditative experience of working under the glow of fluorescent microscopy. Here, the microscope shines green light at the specimen while the woman looks through the objective. She has incubated her specimen with a green light fluorophore-conjugated antibody, and where it binds it absorbs the green light and emits red light back towards her view. She carefully counts the points of red light through the objective and through the microscope’s image reproduced on the computer screen.
