2019: Our Year in Review

Dear Doctors Who Create community,

It has been a wonderful year (and decade!) for our community, and for the intersection of medicine and creativity.  From starting this community in April 2015, to having our inaugural conference, Creativity in Medicine, in April 2019, we have focused on bringing you content, connections, and experiences that stand by our mission to foster creativity in medicine.

In the last year, we have had many exciting things to share:

Our inaugural conference took place  in April 2019 at the College of Physicians at the Mutter Museum in Philadelphia, featuring keynote speaker Dr. Emily Silverman (creator of The Nocturnists) and many exciting panelists, workshop leaders, and storytellers from across medical training levels and creative disciplines. Below are some pictures and highlights; you can visit our conference page to see the full schedule of events and speakers.

With the help of our podcast producers/leads Shiv and Darlina, we published monthly podcast episodes, including some in collaboration with the NYU Medical Humanities Program. Below are a couple – subscribe to our podcast also titled “Doctors Who Create” on iTunes, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts, to hear more!

We continued to feature incredible physician-creatives on our Profiles in Creativity section, like an ophthalmologist-painter, a pediatrician-designer, and surgeon-carpenter. We published more book reviews and poetry.

And, we launched a brilliant new logo designed by our staff member Isabella Cuan:

Alex Chen and Isabella Cuan are planning the next conference, which will be taking place in Spring 2020 – follow us on twitter and subscribe to our mailing list to stay informed about registration!

In 2020, we hope to continue to reach a wider audience interested in creativity in medicine, and to plan a successful second conference. If you want to help out, you can always email doctorswhocreate@gmail.com.

Happy New Year! We hope this year (and decade) is full of lots of creative inspiration and time. Thank you as always for your support and interest.

Cheers,

Vidya Viswanathan
